Not that I think anyone on my friendslist can actually afford any of this, it is worth perusing and drooling.

Fish Fry Happiness

  • Nov. 27th, 2009 at 9:33 PM
I went out to dinner with Mr S tonight since I was craving a fish fry. I grew up in Milwaukee in a Catholic neighborhood, so Fridays mean an innate craving for fishy goodness. We tried out the little family restaurant at Milwaukee and Stoughton Road (the one that used to be a Country Kitchen and hosted Social Practice for awhile years back). I had not yet been there since it looked like the sort of place that was mostly frequented little blue-haired grannies, but they advertised a fish fry and were close by the house.

It turns out I was right in my suspicions about the clientele - Mr S and I perceptibly dropped the average age of the location by walking through the door. However, the fish was really very tasty and reasonably priced. The hot buffet had a lot of fish and non-fish offerings, which included fried cod, baked cod, fried Alaskan pollack, fried chicken, fried shrimp, fried smelt, BBQ ribs, mashed potatoes, corn, and fries. We each had the Fish Buffet - soup, salad bar, the hot buffet, and a beer or wine for $10. All you can eat perch was $8 and the single servings of fish ran around $7 for the soup and salad bar, a potato, and four pieces of fish. And the fish was very, very good. Happiness.

Next time folks want to go for a fish fry, I now have a good recommendation. :)

You Dream It; Winston Does It

  • Nov. 27th, 2009 at 8:13 PM

As we celebrate the season of gluttony, Winston decides to dispense with the silverware and push his face straight into his Thanksgiving feast.  Don’t tell me you haven’t considered doing this yourself at least once.

We give thanks to Rich over at FourFour!

The Next Adventure

  • Nov. 27th, 2009 at 1:31 PM
I have a new job. A job that does not involve me having to answer eleventy billion calls per day. The fact that I made it six months is truly surprising to me. I only broke down crying in the restroom twice! My last day was supposed to be Sunday, but after this morning answering phones wasn't going to happen.

While I wasn't thriled with the whole phone thing I will miss the peeps. Some truly awesome individuals work there and I'm going to miss seeing them. Thankfully a lot of them have FaceBook.

So what will I be doing now? I'm working for a company that makes name badges, patches and tag for the military. I start Monday and will have a "normal" schedule.
For nearly the 500 years since it took place, experts have disputed the location of the Battle of Bosworth which saw the defeat of Richard III. Now a team of historians and archaeologists believe they have found the site.

This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things

  • Nov. 27th, 2009 at 5:22 PM

“I leave you alone for the day, and just look at this mess! The toilet paper’s shredded, there’s trash all over the floor, a team of squirrels is running a telemarketing call center from the guest bedroom, and a man outside wants to know where to install my weapons-grade uranium centrifuge!”

Hey, talk to the cat about the toilet paper, man.

Did you order these 24 pizzas, Emily D.?

grrrrr

  • Nov. 27th, 2009 at 8:54 AM
So I have discovered that I can hurt myself more easily that I thought. Fighting on Wednesday I managed to do something vile to my low back. Nobody was at fault, but it is making moving around interesting.

Thanksgiving was nice, but the boy was bored with all the adults and no other kids. We have to find a way to have more kids around.

Muscle relaxers and sleep are my future for the next day or so.

ack!

Peace out y'all!

Galileo relics found

  • Nov. 27th, 2009 at 12:38 PM
Records report that, in the 18th century, three fingers, a tooth and a vertebra were removed from the tomb of Galileo Galilei and placed in a container. Since then, a finger and the vertebra have turned up, but the tooth and other fingers were still missing. Now, two fingers and a tooth have been found and are scheduled to be placed on display.

A successful Thanksgiving. Even if I did cook more than three people (me, Dom, and dad) would eat. But leftovers rock, don't they?

Well, all except for the little mishap with my thumb and a mandoline which continues to make life interesting.

Made turkey, scalloped potatoes, sweet potatoes, green beans, stuffing, cornbread, and several desserts - pumpkin pie, cherry/strawberry crumble, and cheesecake ice cream.

Plans this weekend are, well, very little. There will be cleaning, and setting up of my spinning wheel (*squeal*), and some school work. I am, all told, rather pleased with myself.

I give thanks...

What I am most thankful for

  • Nov. 26th, 2009 at 3:59 PM
So, [info]ichiban_victory posted the following question, which I in turn give to all of you:

If you had to narrow down what you're thankful for to just one thing, what would it be, and why?

She already made a fantastic post on the fact that we're alive. So, what am I grateful for beyond that? The immense amounts of love in my life.

I have the love of my family, who has supported me no matter what I've chosen to do. My mom did not hesitate to help me financially, even lectured me over feeling guilty about it, when I was out of work last fall. She came out to Arizona to meet Mike and his mum, she helped me get home this week so I can spend a little time with them. My brothers are pretty awesome. Tony came out and jumped Mama's car after the battery ran dry and I can talk to him about anything. I wish I could see Chris more. Melissa is a wonderful sister-in-law, and I have four fantastic nieces and nephews. All of them are great kids, and their parents should be so proud of them. I do love my dad and stepmother too. Even better, I have a new family I'm marrying into, all of which are just utterly fantastic.

I have the love of my friends, and I am constantly amazed at how much they believe in me. If it wasn't for them, especially my journalism mentors, I wouldn't be heading back into newspapers right now with a renewed passion and belief in them. They realize the best about me, which I often overlook. I'm loved for who I am, and they bring out the best in me. They've stuck by me at my lowest, and have been there for me at the best times. My friends are the family that I've chosen, and I'm so very glad I have them.

I have the love of my kitties ... when it is convenient for them.

I also have the love of an incredible man, who not only adores me but wants to spend the rest of his life with me. I never thought I would find anyone like Mike - someone who is not only my best friend, but accepts me for who I am in all things, including my faults. He also understands my love for my career and wants me to chase my dreams, be it in newspapers, as an author, or more. He's willing to go where ever I do, and that's just amazing. He's also willing to comfort me as the flight back to Phoenix goes through incredible turbulence to the point where I'm grabbing my tray table to keep steady. I never thought I'd find a true partner. We found each other, and for that, we're both immensely thankful.

So happy Thanksgiving and to all, a Merry Black Friday!

Coco the Boston Terrier has some guidelines for you to make it through Thanksgiving successfully.

1. Unbuttoned pants (or cataloons) so stomach can expand beyond normal perameters.
2. Take a short nap.
3. Eat a large dessert.
